About Audlem

This is a delightful village settled in lovely open countryside on the banks of the Shropshire Canal. It was first mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086 and was granted its Market Charter by King Edward in 1276. Since this date, at various stages in its long history the village has flourished, however it is still not overly large and thus has managed to retain a warm ambience and timeless charm.

A walk around the village reveals pleasant black and white timber framed properties, delightful cottages, and buildings of the Victorian era when the canal system and railways came to the area. The canal, once the scene of Victorian and early 20th century barges is now a place for leisure and pleasure. Here you can sit entranced by pretty narrow boats, or watch the canal wild-life float by - you can also enjoy a quiet stroll along pleasant tow paths.

The church remains the focus of the village, this is dedicated to St.James, it is in the Gothic style with a handsome oak ceiling, it occupies a central position on the village square. The other notable building in the area is Dorfold Hall, a red-brick gabled Jacobean house of 1661 set in the midst of a beautiful garden. The Great Chamber of the Hall shows superb original plasterwork and panelling, other rooms have lovely 18th century furniture and decorations.

The rolling landscape around the area is mainly agricultural land grazed by cattle and sheep. This is a prime location for cattle especially as dairy farming is allied to the manufacture of the famous milky Cheshire Cheese with its unique crumbly texture.

Audlem lies between Nantwich and Market Drayton, it is within easy reach of the Secret Bunker and Stapely Water Park, all of which make interesting visits.
