Sound mirrors at Denge Beach, Kent

Sound mirrors were used to detect firstly Zeppelins approaching England's east coast over the North Sea, then aircraft over the English Channel. They were superseded by radar in the late nineteen-thirties, but the centralised fighter control system they engendered was a vital factor in countering the air attacks on Britain in 1940.
