Description

A picture of Surfleet

The Anglican parish church of Surfleet, Lincolnshire is dedicated to St Laurence and parts of it date back to Norman times. Soon after construction of the spire the tower began to lean over as the foundations began to sink into the fenland soil under the weight. Although not particularly evident from this shot the tower is almost 2 metres out of perpendicular. Until the late 1970s the bells were the lightest peal of twelve bells in the world hung for change ringing. Interestingly due to the lean of the tower two bells are technically hung outside the foundations of the church.
