About Taunton

There is little doubt that this town is best known for the production of Cider (which is reputed to be Prince Williams' favourite drink)
but this golden beverage should not be the only reason for your visit for there is much to see both in and around this most delightful aenglish towns.

St.Mary's church and the church of St.James' both have perpendicular towers which have been rebuilt and a visit to both churches cannot fail to inspire.

Other noteworthy buildings are Gray's Almshouses said to date from 1635 and the 12th century castle which now houses a museum and is reputed to be one of the places where Judge Jeffreys Bloody Assizes were held following the Battle of Sedgemoor in the year 1685. There are many other building of interest including an ancient priory barn.

Taunton is rightly proud of it's long association with education, a public school was first established in the town in the 13th century.

To-day, Taunton is bustling and thriving. There is a cosmopolitan community which allows for a wide variety of shops with all major high street stores being well represented. There are several well known eating houses in the town and the gentle surrounding countryside provides the visitor with a good selection of quaint inns and modern pubs to choose from
