Description

Angel Hill, The Angel

This building has been here since 1778. Charles Dickens stayed at this Suffolk coaching inn twice in the mid-19th century and on both occasions, he resided in room 215 (the compact four-poster bed he slept on remains in use today). The writer immortalised his affection for The Angel by mentioning it, albeit briefly, in 'Pickwick Papers': 'The coach rattled through the streets of a handsome town of thriving and cleanly appearance and stopped before a large Inn situated in a wide open street facing the old abbey. "This must be Bury St Edmunds, and this" said Mr Pickwick, looking up, "is the Angel".'
