About Warwick

Warwick offers its visitors the chance to explore England's fascinating history with fine medieval buildings and a truly magnificent castle which is not only the finest castle in England, but also one of a few that are still habitable. For nearly 1,000 years the famous castle remained the seat of the Earls of Warwick and until only recently remained their home. The castle is set in 60 acres of beautiful grounds and is one of England's most popular tourist attractions. The town of Warwick itself, was struck by a great fire in 1694 which destroyed much of its central streets and buildings, allowing for some fine Georgian buildings and a new church tower to arise from the ashes. Warwick has many buildings of interest which survived the fire including the town's medieval Guildhall, now the Lord Leycester Hospital, as well as a group of fine timber-framed buildings around Oken's House which was once the home of Thomas Oken, Warwick's 16th century bailiff and a public benefactor. Oken's House now contains a doll museum with a fine collection of a few hundred antique dolls. Warwick's Church of St Mary's is a fine church dating back to pre norman times and is a must visit. It is only a hundred yards from the castle and contains one of the finest medieval tombs in Britain. The church also has a 174 feet tall tower that is open to visitors, offering fantastic views of the town of Warwick and it's surrounding countryside.
