About Horsham
This is a busy town that expanded rapidly during the 20th century, fortunately modern development has not altered too much of Horsham's old character, and quaint little corners still remain to enchant the visitor.
A feature of the town is St.Mark's Church in North Street, this was built in 1839 but was considerably altered during restoration work of around 1869. This church is sadly no longer a place of worship, but is being used for a voluntary centre.
Shopping in the town is a pleasure, it has wide traffic free shopping streets crammed with a diverse range of attractive shops. National chain stores mingle with well established family run businesses and specialist shops.
To learn a little of the town's ancient history you could do no better than visit Horsham Museum, this retains thousands of documents relating to the town, its culture, heritage and surrounding areas.
There is plenty for the visitor to do, Leonardslee Gardens offer a delightful landscape full of interest and colour, a marvellous place to escape and relax away from the town's busy central areas.
A Leisure Centre offers a gym, bowling and swimming, and there is an up to the minute Arts Centre, with theatre, cinema and art gallery.
Horsham Park is yet another green and pleasant landscape, this has lovely picnic areas, play areas for children, a pond with ducks to feed, and a fine Victorian Bandstand offering summer musical entertainment.
A fascinating sculpture is one of Horsham's most recent additions, it was funded by Sun Alliance, and is known as The Shelley Fountain. It was built in 1996, it's title "The Rising Universe" is depicted by its gushing waters which swiftly rise upwards to descend slowly down again. The fountain was inspired by a poem - Mont Blanc, written by the poet Shelley. The sculpture was designed by noted Angela Connor. This can be found in an area that has been attractively redeveloped featuring a stream, rocks a bridges - these are a delightful centrepiece for the many " Al-fresco" eating establishments of the area.
Horsham is a popular commuter area for people working in London or Gatwick, it also offers an ideal location for tourists wishing to stay in the pleasant atmosphere of a once old market town with rural surroundings whilst they explore the sights and sounds of London.
