About Whipsnade Wild Animal Park

Where better to go for a great family day out than the zoo. Here, at Whipsnade, under the great open sky you can enjoy the wonderful world of animals in a truly friendly environment. It really is a fun place for everyone, where at whatever age you can not only enjoy yourself but also learn much about the animals living there - these range from African lions and Elephants to Oriental Small Clawed Otters and Egyptian Tortoises. Many of the animals have been brought from their own wild habitat and, if left to the vagaries of both man and nature, would quite likely become extinct. At Whipsnade these animals are nurtured and helped a continuous programme of research.

Creatures of the wild can be found at Whipsnade from most of the Worlds' vast continents, this includes not only the great majestic animals that we know, love and admire, but snakes, spiders, birds of prey, glorious colourful peacocks, and a family of penguins, so feeding times can be very exciting indeed.

The zoo is situate in 600 of magnificent countryside that is part of Dunstable Downs, bordering with the Chiltern Hills. Because of the large white lion figure carved into the side of the downs, Whipsnade is even identifiable from the air! Historically, the zoo was the brainchild of Sir Peter Chalmers Mitchell, who saw it as being a conservation centre. When it opened its door to the public in 1931, it was the first of its kind in Europe and the zoo has remained at the forefront of conservation ever since.

A lot of the animals roam free, just a few are kept in enclosures. There is an interesting Discovery centre where you can enjoy visiting the Reptile, Primate and Insect houses, in these you can see crocodiles, leaf-cutter ants, small primates, and locusts to name but a few.

Getting around the park is easy, if walking is not for you there is a bus that takes you to almost every corner so on arrival you can plan your visit to make sure you see all the attractions on offer. Mind you, on foot you really can make the most of your visit as this enables you to get as close up to nature as possible and probably enjoy meeting giraffe's, Australian wallabies, South African mara, and even Ben the resident Hippo in his muddy pool! The zoo is famous for its breeding program so there is always the possibility of seeing animals with their young.

There is all of this and much, much more, Whipsnade Zoo offers a day out that will be fun for all the family.
