About Ixworth

Small village with a grand abbey which was started in the 12th-century as an Augustinian priory. In the 16th-century it was turned into dwelling houses, now all that remains of the priory is the vaulted undercroft which has been retained as part of the house built on the site.

Ixworth, is an attractive place, it has the usual village facilities of shops, post office and excellent inn. It is noted as the home of the Ixworth Cockerel, first bred in the village during the 1930's and in spite of a chequered history, to this day the Ixworth Cockerel remains the tasty choice of housewives everywhere.

Ixworth's great treasure is it's beautiful church which dates pre-15th-century. It is thought the church may have been built on the site of a religious foundation of the year 1100. It is a magnificent church which at first sight is quite overwhelming, the decorative exterior is matched by the majestic interior which has a wealth of fascinating treasures including a beautiful font and several memorials and brasses. Strangely, for such an imposing church, it is surrounded only by a small churchyard.

The village is but a short distance from Pakenham where you can see a restored 18th-century Water Mill, and within easy driving distance of picturesque Bury St. Edmonds. This part of Suffolk is fine touring country where you will find much to admire and enjoy. Good hotels are easily found and there is a host of tourist attractions.

Things to do and places to see include: Ickworth House, Park and Gardens, Pakenham Windmill, Pakenham Water Mill, Mechanical Music Museum and Bygones, West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village and Country Park, Museum of East Anglia Life and Walsham le Willows.
