Hi Krissy, missed you on the games last night.

Paul, just looked at the website Spivs, really good, they were petty criminals, not like todays thieves and con-men

hi, again. thanks for that. if you can watch some of the british TV crime series such as Miss Marple or Midsommer Murders.

I love those shows! I have watched ALL Miss Marple versions and Poirot and half of the M.M. (there are so many).

I actually have the Agatha Christie's early works/short stories of Marple and Poirot .

See, I said I was an Anglophile. 8-P

Yes Peggy, the 'spivs' were just 'black-market racketeers', buying and selling what they could get hold of, bit like Arthur Daley in 'Only fools and Horses' lol.

Food rationing of course went on till the early 50's until imports were re-established. (some 'dodgy' grocers would stick a small piece of bacon underneath the dish on the wieghscales so that when wieghing out butter, sugar, flour, rice etc., that they sold by wieght, they would make a few pence on the deal by selling underwieght measures.lol

Hi lara,BRIGHTWELL  is a typical little Suffolk village close to Martlesham Heath.  I have just found that I have no pictures of Martlesham on POE yet I took many of them, but obviosly lost, oh well back to Martlesham.

I must add that the REAL gentry were not snobs, I know from the experience of my elders that those who lived in the large Halls and owned large estates were really friendly and kind ...

Thank you, Peggy! I am glad to hear that all the gentry were not as snooty as they are portrayed on TV. And Brightwell sounds good, I think I chose it as a possibility...

But  I think Upstairs Downstairs did show another era of Lord and Lady Bellamy of Eaton Place, Belgravia and the relationships in their household.

Hi Paul! I watched a 2 DVDs of that show. I believe the Bellamy family lived in London, though, right?

It was interesting but ... for some reason I stopped watching.

Yes! Me, too! You are always welcome to visit Las Vegas - we need more visitors (ha!ha!) to pick up our economy.

Thanks, Cathy. I have a great book by Norman Longmate, The Way We Lived Then. Excellent about every-day life during the war. There is a whole chapter about rationing (even info on the special ration books for pregnant women who had extra rations).

young women at that time couldnt purchase nylon stockings (pantihose) as , due to the war, they were hard to get hold of (unless you knew an American serviceman.) When going to a dance some young women would 'spray-tan' their legs with gravey browning or draw a line down the rear of the legs to make it appear they were wearing nylon stockings.
