  Are we all saying the same thing here? In my days of working on MOD bases, quite a few had a plane on a pole or plinth at the entrance and as Dave said, our John does like his planes. One that comes to mind was Stanmore , North London sure that had on eat the entrance.

Vince has it for sure. My understanding is they are old or disused planes, tanks, jeeps, whatever, situated at the gates of military bases. Scampton near Lincoln used to, maybe still does, have a Harrier.

  Ok folks and thank you but I just joined up the dots so to speak, anyway to keep the little grey cells ticking over and I hope I have not done this one before :-     Where in Sussex is Stepney?

 Sorry John not the answer I am looking for, if we were looking for street names I have seen a Padstow in Crawley as well.

             Keep a looking sir- may have to be a bit further out of the box.

There is an old steam locomotive named Stepney and it runs on the Bluebell Railway which has its headquarters at Sheffield Park Station.
