We are making headway on our tour of the English Counties.  So far we have Whistle Stop Tours of the Isles of Scilly, Cornwall & Devon (these can be found on the thread English Counties - Whistle Stop Tour); Dorset; Hampshire & Isle of Wight; Sussex West & East; Kent; Surrey; Berkshire; Wiltshire; & Somerset.  Our last stop was Bristol in the County of Somerset from where we are going to proceed into Gloucestershire, first moving along the west to the glorious Forest of Dean.  Then to Gloucester, Cheltenham & Tewkesbury from where we can wander through the beautiful Cotswold villages on the east side, completing the tour at Cirencester.

So to start.  Leaving Somerset we travel through many smaller towns with great attractions, we will stop of and check out Berkeley Castle which has a Great Hall dating from the mid 14th Century

King John's Hunting Lodge, St Briavels Castle built in 1205.  The towers flanking the gatehouse date from 1293 and are now a Youth Hostel where you can enjoy medieval banquets on Wednesdays and Saturdays during August.  Pity we just missed that!!

We have reached The Forest of Dean, an ancient forest that King John hunted in (hence the hunting lodge above!)  The forest covers some 35,000 acres and within its borders are several villages, some well known for the ironmaking.  Mitcheldean & Cinderford (no pictures or descriptions!) at Cinderford there is the Dean Heritage Centre and 5 museums.  At Coleford there is an historic dock and nearby the Clearwell Caves.  There is a Sculpture Trail in the Forest and magnificent views of the Wye Valley, visit Offa's Dyke and Lydney Park, a Victorian Mansion with a Roman Temple, ironage fort and splendid views (didn't find any pics, sorry)

Having strolled/driven through the villages of The Forest of Dean we are now journeying to our first Gloucestershire City - GLOUCESTER.  There are several attractions mentioned: Bishop Hooper's Lodging, Guildhall, Blackfriars & the House of the Tailor of Gloucester.  National Waterways Museum and nearby Robinswood Hill Country Park (sorry I could pinpoint any pictures of the above).  But I can show you pictures of the Cathedral the Gloucester Docks and Painswick Rococo Gardens.
