Welcome to Poe from me too Agnello; just a few miles north of you. For reasons I've never been able to find, the abbreviation for Hampshire is Hants. just like the abbreviation for Oxfordshire is Oxon. Maybe someone can tell us how these oddities came about?

Hi Paul, Thank you for your warm welcome. Yes it would be rather interesting to find about the origins of the abbreviations given for the many counties in England. Sounds good, as we can to get together for a beer sometime. Ag

Rupert Brooke for sums up this lovely country we live in!

In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;
A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,
Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam,
A body of England's, breathing English air,
Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home.

And think, this heart, all evil shed away,
A pulse in the eternal mind, no less
Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given;
Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;
And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness,
In hearts at peace, under an English heaven.
