Voyage down the Severn, Beachley.

Voyage down the Severn, Beachley.

Atyla is a two-masted wooden schooner built in Spain between 1980 and 1984. Designed by Esteban Vicente Jimenez to look like the Spanish vessels from the 1800s and built with the intention of circumnavigating the earth following the Magellan–Elcano route and then become a training ship.[2] Although she never did that trip and instead sailed around Spain for almost her 30 years, in 2013 Esteban’s nephew became her new skipper and decided to finally dedicate her to international sail training for both professionals and amateurs.

Morgenster Passing, Beachley.

Morgenster Passing, Beachley.

The brigantine Morgenster on her way down the River Severn after taking part in the Gloucester Tall Ships Festival. No wind but her sails were up and she was able to navigate the channel using her engines. Morgenster was launched in 1919 as a herring lugger ‘Vrouw Maria’ In 1927 she was motorised and renamed ‘Morgenster’. She continued as a motorised fishing vessel until 1970. After loosing certificates for this business she was sold to a Rotterdam’s singer who was said to prepare the ship for ether piracy. The singer was prosecuted, but after a series of trials and 2½ years later he was freed and regained the possession of his ship. In 1983 Marian and Harry Muter bought the vessel in a terrible state of maintenance. After a lengthy rebuild, in June 2008 she was formally blessed into the sailing world again by the very sympathetic Minister Maria van der Hoeve. Morgenster proved to be a fine vessel ever since, and fast enough in all sorts of weather and easy to handle.

An evening view from Bulwarks Camp (an Iron age fort),a small defensive hill fort on top of cliffs overlooking the River Wye , the Beachley peninsula and the Severn Estuary. Directly below me is a railway line and the river Wye, you can also see the ridge and furrow on the meadows, these are flooded at high tides.
