War Memorial, Alkborough, Lincolnshire The War Memorial at Alkborough takes the form of a Celtic Cross and stands on the church green. It names 11 men of the parish who fell in WWI and bears the following inscription : "To the Glory of God and to the Memory of the men of this Parish who fell in the World War 1914-1918. Their Name liveth for evermore." Added later are the names of 5 men who fell in WWII with the inscription: "To the Memory of those who fell in the Great War, 1939-1945. Saint John the Baptist's, Alkborough, Lincolnshire The Anglican parish church in the lovely village of Alkborough is dedicated to St. John The Baptist. A small monastic establishment is believed to have existed at Alkborough just prior to the Norman Conquest. The church tower is thought to be of Anglo-Saxon origin dating back to 1052. The church was restored in 1887 by John Oldrid Scot who built the chancel in the Early English Style. He also built the wooden south porch which has a pattern of Julian's Bower, the local turf maze, set into the floor. Village Sign, Alkborough, Lincolnshire The Village sign at Alkborough greets you on entering this lovely little village with a representation of Julian's Bower, a rare Turf Maze said to be of medieval origin & which can be found in the village overlooking the confluence of the Rivers Trent and Ouse.
