George V Post Box, Belton, Lincolnshire

George V Post Box, Belton, Lincolnshire

Visiting Belton recently I spotted what I expected to be a Victorian postbox but which turned out to be a George V model. Looking as if it has been moved at some time to it's present position (see different mortar) it is mounted below a window and unusually just a few inches from the ground.

The Anglican Parish church at Belton, Lincolnshire, is dedicated to St.Peter & St.Paul and stands on a site which was a dry promontory, and therefore an ancient meeting place for people awaiting the correct time to fording the River Witham and it's marshes. A church is recorded at Belton in the Doomsday survey (1085-7). The church has features from many periods including Norman, late medieval, Georgian & Victorian. Much work was carried out on the church in the early 1800's including the addition of a memorial chapel on the north side of the church. Each of the pinnacles of the tower is topped by a weather vane formed as an element of the Browlow family arms.

Courtyard Entrance, Belton House, Belton, Lincolnshire. The approach to the house most used, apart from on formal occasions, would have been through the archway and into the courtyard, viewed here from the house, to the west entrance as the family lived privately in the west wing of the house. The clock tower over the archway is designed on an axis with, and to complement, the cupola on top of the house itself.
