On HMS Victory's deck, Portsmouth, Hampshire

A tangle of ropes and pulleys on the deck of HMS Victory. All needed for raising and lowering the many sails. One original sail of the Victory survives from the Battle of Trafalgar at Portsmouth historic dockyard.

Below deck on HMS Victory, Portsmouth in Hampshire

Walking round the lower decks of HMS Victory the most noticeable thing is the number of cannons and the relatively small amount of space there was for the men. What you won't appreciate in the very spruced up ship now is the heat, smells, dirt and overcrowding which were the daily lot of the sailors.
