Taken from the Woodpecker Hide

Taken from the Woodpecker Hide

Well back at Warnham Nature Reserve and in the Woodpecker hide we have a shot of - well not a woodpecker. More like a chaffinch I would guess. I have not seen or heard a woodpecker there so far but am sure they would be, one needs to be more of a regular visitor to know all of the residents there. Also many of the birds at Warnham are temporary as it is an ideal place for stopovers for migrating flocks.

He Darts Here and He Darts There

He Darts Here and He Darts There

Well I think he does and he did stop long enough for a few shots but as far as I know he is a " Darter " although I do not know which species in the Darter family. Can't make him out though, there were acres of woodland here at the Warnham Nature Reserve along with a huge expanse of water know as the Millpond plus a lot of different habitats -but where does he hang out? Right by the cafe and way in to the reserve, still I am not complaining.

A Straight and Level Flight

A Straight and Level Flight

Back in the Heron Hide again at Warnham Nature Reserve and on the other side of the Millpond you can see many herons making like a statue waiting for some dinner to swim by. Warnham Nature Reserve is well known for it's large heronry as well as giviving the heron hide it's name. Seeing a heron in flight or taking off/landing does remind you of something from the days of the dinosaurs and the call of the heron certainly sounds like those days- well I think it does.

OH YEAH !!! THIS IS WARNHAM NATURE RESERVE AND IT'S MY PATCH.

OH YEAH !!! THIS IS WARNHAM NATURE RESERVE AND IT'S MY PATCH.

One bluetit with a bit of attitude staking his claim ( well it is a good billet and there is always loads of grub to hand- well beak and wing). I took this shot from the Woodpecker Hide where I have taken quite a few shots in the past. With a bit of patience one can watch the pattern of the bird's behaviour and be ready for that shot. Oh I just sussed it, he must have seen his reflection in the camera lens- whatever next, a narcissistic bluetit.

Not all the fishermen are kingfishers.

Not all the fishermen are kingfishers.

Another shot from the Heron Hide at the edge of the Millpond at Warnham Nature Reserve and we see hiding out of focus in the background a heron on fishwatch. I could see at least five herons on the opposite bank doing their statue thing looking for fish to pass, in fact Warnham Nature Reserve has a very large heronry providing a good billet for these birds and loads more, too many too list.

NOW YOUR IN MY SIGHTS AT LAST !!!

NOW YOUR IN MY SIGHTS AT LAST !!!

Well, Warnham Nature Reserve has come up trumps at last and my first ever kingfisher sighting other than a streak of blue. Taken from the Heron Hide looking our over the Millpond at last this little character appeared on one of a series of posts- it would be the second to furthest away wouldn't it? So shots in the bag but really pinpricks in the centre of the picture so just about as far as it will blow up----- " Need a Bigger Lens" to quote a line from a famous film.

This Cafe Has Got A Lot Of Tables.

Shot taken from the Woodpecker Hide at Warnham Nature Reserve where there is always someone dropping in for lunch. As well as the many number of varieties of birds, many different four legged characters dine here as well.

The Way Through The Woods

The Way Through The Woods

Part of the Warnham Nature Reserve, the path leads from the Heron Hide and wends it's way to the area of the reserve where it can be quite boggy and at times flooded so there one can negotiate that part of the area on boardwalks. One word of warning- I have taken the route on the boardwalks a few time and on most occasions I have ended up being super for the flying-biting things. An experimental shot as well- playing with new glass up front.

Dipping Pond Visitors

Dipping Pond Visitors

Wherever you look at the Warnham Nature Reserve there is always some wildlife to see. Here there are some dipping ponds with a small pontoon which makes for a nice spot for these two to hop in and out of the water with little effort. I presume we have a couple of Canadian geese posing .

It Was Meant to be a Kingfisher

It Was Meant to be a Kingfisher

A short call at Warnham Nature Reserve today in the hope of catching sight of a kingfisher, but alas there was no sign of the elusive characters. I have never seen a kingfisher let alone photograph one save for a momentary flash of blue on the River Mole a few years ago. I believe this to be a Mandarin duck- well the chart on the inside of what is called the "Heron Hide" said as much. Kingfishers are often seen from this hide but never when I am there ( last time I visited a chap there waving his 500mm prime lens about showed me a kingfisher on his screen that he had just taken, so they are there--- sometimes !! )

On the lookout

On the lookout

Taken from one of the hides at the nature reserve, always a sight to enjoy here. One can usually see a selection on birdlife here, BUT still not seen the kingfishers yet. I have been trying to take some kingfisher shots but so far it has been one flash of blue and that is that. While here on Wednesday as I entered one of the hides one chap already there made with the sshh motion-- a kingfisher was around but very skittish. You guessed it, it did not return but the chap showed me the capture he got before I got there- a very, very good shot of the bird on a post in the water and the bird filled the frame super sharp (it did help he was using a 500mm prime lens). A question - what is the best time of day to catch the kingfisher?

HEY !!!! What's Going On Over There Then ?

In the Mill Pond these two did not move from their spots , they had a quick clean of the feathers but spent most of the time head down-- except for this moment of interest.

A very lazy character this one with a beady eye on the camera. Here at the Nature Reserve a small flock were in residence today where last time the meadow was open to stroll in.

Heron Hide - Warnham Nature Reserve.

Heron Hide - Warnham Nature Reserve.

Called the Heron hide as on the far bank Herons make their nests. All I managed to see on my visit to the hide was swans and ducks. If you are lucky enough kingfishers can be seen here as well.
