About Yarnton

An interesting feature of Yarnton is the beautiful old manor house, now home to the Oxfordshire Centre for Jewish and Hebrew Studies. The history of the manor goes back to Norman times, the Spencer family lived here from 1580 to 1712. Sir Thomas Spencer was responsible for transforming the manor into one of the largest Jacobean houses in England, building work took place in 1612 and the Spencer arms are visible above the porch.

The local church dates from the 13th-century, it has a fine Jacobean screen and when the church was enlarged during the 17th-century a graceful tower was added. The walled churchyard has graves and tombs of local landed gentry and noted townsfolk.

Yarnton lies in close proximity to Bladon where Sir Winston Churchill is buried, and is not too far from Blenheim Palace at Woodstock, his ancestral family home.

This interesting place makes an ideal base for exploring fine Oxfordshire and Cotswold villages which are crammed with wonderful gems from our nations historic past.
