Birdsalls in Thornton-le-Dale

Would appreciate info on Birdsall family & their place in Thornton-le-Dale history. 

Richard Birdsall was b. 1799 in Thornton-le-Dale & emigrated to Ontario, where he married (first Elizabeth Burnam & then) Charlotte Jane Everett, whose daughter,  Charlotte Emily Birdsall, was my gg-grandmother (m. Frank Brooke Brega).

Wow, thanks, Ron & Cathy, for your prompt attention!  Cathy, I actually have quite a bit of information on the Birdsalls after they got to Canada.  Sorry I wasn't clear on my query.  I was hoping to find out if there are still Birdsalls in the Thornton-le-Dale area and, if so, if they know anything of the family's local history (family occupations, homes - if still standing, etc.).

Thanks again to both of you for responding so quickly!  I'm really impressed by this website - so many beautiful pictures - really whets my appetite to visit the British Isles some day!

I originally asked if you knew when he arrived in Canada so we knew what dates to be looking for here. You only mentioned that he was born 1799 not the date of his leaving England or marriage in Canada. 

If I presume that he left England when he was 20 that would be 1819 so I would look for family records about 10 years before 1799 up to 1820 or so.  See what I mean about the need for dates as a frame of reference.

The British phone books are on the internet and can be accessed for you to find out if anyone currently lives in the area with that surname, then you could contact them directly.

I see what you mean, Cathy, & thank you so much, but I really didn't expect anyone to do the research for me!  Was just hoping there was a remote possiblity that a descendant from another Birdsall line might happen across the posting.

Per the online  Dictionary of Canadian Biography, he left England in 1817, after having been educated with an eye to a career in the Royal Navy.  His elder brother, William, emigrated with him.

 The online phone book is an EXCELLENT suggestion --- should have thought of it myself.

And I guess Cleveland is the nearest of the options it comes up with of the areas to choose from.  

Richard's father was Francis Birdsall (1754-1803) and in the mid-1800s in  Thornton-le-Dale, there was another Richard Birdsall. b. 1796 and his wife Mabel. And as you likely already know, your line from Ontario soon switches to Nebraska where Charlotte seems to have ended up.

Thanks for the link, Paul!  Didn't understand what you meant by Cleveland until I tried 192.  Yes, I had gone to the phone book, but, as you say, it didn't show the correct Thornton.

Yes, the Bregas moved down through Detroit to Nebraska, & some ended up with a significant amount of land.  Wish it were still in the family!
