Budleigh's Raleigh wall

John Everett Millais painted a picture entitled "The Boyhood of Raleigh" in 1870. The picture hangs in the Tate usually but at the moment it's not. Nevertheless, the wall still exists and can be seen in this photograph in front of the lamp post.

Budleigh has rain

Surprising as it may seem, Budleigh Salterton still has rain. We've had lots of it recently and here is proof. At least the garden and countryside benefits from it.

Spear Thistle

Seen on a walk around Budleigh Salterton, the spear thistle, bull thistle, or common thistle, is a species of the Asteraceae genus Cirsium, native throughout most of Europe, Western Asia, and northwestern Africa. It is also naturalised in North America, Africa, and Australia and is an invasive weed in some areas.

Budleigh cinnabar moth

This red and black moth fluttered into the grass nearby. It is a Cinnabar Moth, the eggs and larvae of which are used to eat and clear ragwort weed which is not good for horses.

Pied wagtails are quite frequently found in Budleigh. This one has found a new set of wings after a recent spot of rain that floored a large moth.

This blackbird leapt off the ridge tiles and seems to have forgotten to open his wings to fly. My shutter must have been timed to exclude them.

Squirrel

This little "Houdini" is the reason all the bird food we put out disappears very quickly. He squirrels it all away, even when it's raining.
