About Tewkesbury Abbey
Standing taller than any other building in tewkesbury, is the fantastic tewkesbury abbey. It is over 500 years old and has the tallest Norman tower in England. If you visit Tewkesbury, you MUST visit this grand and fabulous abbey. It is known as The 'Westminster Abbey' of the Feudal Barony. So called because of its wonderful collection of tombs and monuments. It is reputed to be the second largest parish church in England, larger than fourteen cathedrals and has the largest norman tower in England offering fantastic views across the Severn and Avon valleys. Shrouded in history, it has been home to a Benedictine group of monks for over 500 years and played a part in the historic Battle of Tewkesbury that took place in 1471 and was a decisive battle in the War of the Roses. It has splendid architecture throughout and some equisitly sculptured tombs of some of the great families of the middle ages - the de Clares, Despensers, and Beauchamps. It has some of the finest medieval stained glass in the country and is also home to a 17th century Milton organ, reputedly the oldest in the country that is still in daily use today.
