About Iken

Once a renowned fishing village famous for a good catch of herring, salmon and sea trout, Iken is now best known as an idyllic retreat on the Alde Estuary. It is a birdwatchers paradise, which also offers opportunities for boating in the tidal creeks of the Alde.

The beauty of the village lies in its ancient attractive part-thatched church. The church, dedicated to St.Botulf stands raised on a hill position overlooking the Alde Estuary. The present site is thought to be where St.Botulf made his original foundation in the year 654. Saint Botulf died in the year 680 and was buried in Iken, the church has a fascinating history and is fully deserving of a visit. Opposite, across the estuary is an early Anglo-Saxon cemetery.

The beautiful Tunstall Forest is close-by, and at the tip of the estuary the coastal town of Aldeburgh offers a wealth of tourist attractions, while at Snape you will find the famous Snape Maltings, a delightful complex with magnifincent shops and a famous concert hall.

Iken is in a lovely rural area of scattered windmills and old oasthouses. It makes a quieter alternative for exploring the wonderful Suffolk Coast
