About Burnmouth

The delights of Burnmouth belong to when it was a simple fishing harbour where the villagers depended upon the gifts from the sea for their livelihood.

Now-a-days, the village is little altered, fishing continues but many of the old fishermen's cottages, crouching at the foot of a steep hill have been renovated to provide comfortable holiday homes. Fortunately, none of the character of the village is lost, the thick harbour walls and well worn steps still exist, making it a pleasant place from which to watch fishing boats setting out to sea or Lobster pots being hauled ashore. Sometimes, there are pleasure craft and yachts to be seen.

Small but extremely pleasant, with locals who are always willing to chat, often telling of the distant past, when in 1881 many local men lost their lives in the tumultuous, gale-lashed sea. On an historic note, the harbour dates from 1830 and a station was operational from 1846 for around 120 years.

Nearby, Lamberton Moor is famous for bird-watching. It is a tranquil place, with little to disturb the quiet other than the rustle of branches and the sweet sound of birdsong.

Both Burnmouth and Lamberton Moor can be lonely places in the closing months of the year but even then there is a serene enchantment, not much beats the sight of a fisherman's cottage, with smoke curling above an ancient chimney, set against a backdrop of cliff and sea.
