I don't know if I ever mentioned it, but on Saturday, March 5, my cat Russ pulled down a fledgling Eurasian Collared Dove.  The bird didn't appear to have a broken wing, so I put him in a cage on the patio with the intention of letting him get his strength back so I could release him.  Well, long story short, I had him here for 3 weeks and he flew the coop last Sunday (5 days ago), but he still keeps coming around.  He's in the tree on a limb just about 7 or 8 feet off the ground, and just next to the patio every night when I get home from work.  I still offer him a little bird seed, but I'm going to gradually wean him off that.  His parents visited him every day whilst he was in captivity, and they still try and herd him away from here.  But today, he came and just sat on my patio table while I was reading out there.  He had a whole pile of seed on a tray in the yard, but he just seemed content to hang there and keep my company.  It was so cool!

Here's what they look like.  "My" bird is just starting to get his collar.  Unfortunately, they are exotics here and breeding profusely, which doesn't bode well for the natives.

Thank you, Marjorie.  :-)

I just hope the bird doesn't get dependent.  He's flying well, and won't let me touch him, so I think he'll remember his wild roots soon.

That's a lovely tale Ruth, and really very special!  He will probably do the "wild thing" but still visit you in the future.
