The Elizabethan mansion of Shaw House was built in 1581 by Newbury clothier Thomas Dolman. During the Civil War in 1644, the Royalists resolutely held Shaw House, and nearby Donnigton Castle, from the 17,000+ forces of the Paliamentarians and their cavalry commanded by Oliver Cromwell.

The former American temporary bridge over the Kennet and Avon Canal was replaced a few years ago. During WW 2, there were a lot of US Army personnel in the region, with the 101st Airborne Division quite prominent in the area. It's now known as the Millennium Bridge.

A shot of the Kennet and Avon Canal taken from the town centre . The canal was constructed to link London to Bath and was a major route in the early 1800s to transport goods but it's days were numbered once the railways took over. These days it is very busy but with pleasure craft.

West Mills Street which is lined by mainly 18th Century buildings in Newbury. It was sometimes called Globe Lane, named after The Globe pub which today, is Lloyds Bank. The smaller building with TV aerial, was Hunts Almshouses; built 1729 and re-built 1817.The 3 almshouses had been given and endowed by Thomas Hunt for three widows of clothiers.

The Market Place at Newbury, Berkshire that's held a market here for several centuries and also bounded by several pubs and eateries. Market traders set their stalls up here on Thursdays and Saturdays.

Lead musket balls from the Battle of Newbury, 1643 during the English Civil War. Size is approx 16mm or 5/8th inch diameter, and would have been fired from matchlock muskets or pistols. After the Siege of Gloucester the Royalist and Parliamentarian armies headed east towards Reading on different routes that would be converging at Newbury Sept 1643. The Royalist held the town itself and along the Andover road blockaded any further advancement of the Roundheads. The resultant battle over a few days ended in stalemate with some 3,000 soldiers killed. In 1644 Oliver Cromwell returned to West Berkshire with his Parliamentarian army to attack Donnington Castle, Newbury held by the Royalists under Col. John Boys. The resultant battle was yet again inconclusive, though Donnington Castle suffered severe damage from the bombardment of Parliamentarian canons.

Apartments built 1980-82 stand on the site of one of Newbury's mills that had been here since at least the 1600s until it was demolished in 1972. Opposite the mill had been The Crown pub demolished in the 20th century. The mills here giving this area near Newbury's town centre, the name of West Mills.

The name plate above the door knocker states this building is Club House, reflecting to back in the latter 19th Century, it was a Working Mens Club. To its left was also the former Jolly Millers pub now No. 19 West Mills.

The pedestrian island in Newtown Rd ( formerly the A34 trunk road) where the Old London Apprentice pub once stood, it's name refering back to the day's of the Civil War and the London apprentices that supported the Parliamentarians. It closed in 1937 and was demolished in 1950 and in 1958, the St John's roundabout was finally built.

The Corn Exchange in The Market Place, Newbury, Berkshire dates from 1861 and today has been altered into a theatre and arts centre. In the summer of 1944, Capt. Glenn Miller and his band performed here for the people of Newbury and US military personnel in the region.
