About Whitchurch

This village was the home of Jan Struther, poet and Novelist, whose book provided the inspiration for the evocative war-time film Mrs. Miniver, starring Greer Garson. It was an Oscar winning film centred around English middle class country life at the beginning of the Second World War. Immensely watchable, it is a film with many tender moments, I have seen it countless times and always find it very moving.

Whitchurch has many picturesque old buildings, the fact that painter Rex Whistler lived here is indicative of the outstanding charm of the place. An 11th-century castle once stood here but now all traces have vanished. The oldest property in Whitchurch is the 15th-century Priory, a beautiful brick, stone and timber building which was once the home of Jan Struther but is now an interesting, luxury hotel. Market Hill curves delightfully towards Castle Lane is lined with several cottages of merit including some with thickly thatched roofs, hiding little dormer windows.

The church of St.John the Evangelist is in a quiet churchyard setting where lie the graves of noted villagers. The church has a beautiful sundial adorning its strong Norman tower. It has a cool interior with many reminders of its ancient past.

Wherever you wander in this lovely tranquil village you will find something of interest, whether it be the buildings, one of the lovely trees or, a grass verge in a leafy lane full of delicate wild flowers. Whitchurch, offers everything from showpiece architecture to the simplest of experiences. It is a place to terry for a while and from which you will gather cherished memories.
