About Ascott House

This stunningly beautiful house began life in the 17th-century as a small timber-framed black and white farmhouse. It was extended in the 1870's and later in the 1930's when it was in the ownership of the Rothschild family, who used the house as a home and stunning backdrop for Anthony de Rothschild's huge collection of paintings. He was an avid collector of sumptuous works of art and notable paintings include 17th-century Dutch and 18th and 19th-century English.

The rooms open to the public display the Rothschild collection of Chinese porcelain, with over 400 pieces this is considered to be the foremost collection of Chinese ceramics in the world. There is also memorable French furniture in most of the rooms.

Ascott House is set in grounds mostly laid out in the 19th-century, these have a delightful intimate feel with much to please the eye. Particularly the bright flower borders and the many rare trees.

Following the bombing of Chelsea Royal Hospital in 1941, a group of Chelsea Pensioners went to live at Ascott House, they remained until 1947.

Today, Cricket, which was first introduced on a new ground laid out in 1880 by Leopold de Rothschild, continues to be played in the grounds of Ascott House. And although the house and extensive grounds are in the care of the National Trust as gifted by Anthony de Rothschild in 1949, the house remains lived in by his son, Sir Evelyn Rothschild and his family, jus as Sir Anthony wished.

It is perhaps this continuance of family habitation and lively interest that adds to the overall pleasure of Ascott House, it is a rare gem of a property and a chance to visit should not be missed.
