About Lizard

For an abiding memory of sheer grandeur the spectacular scenery surrounding the village of Lizard set in the heart of the Lizard Peninsular is hard to beat, for this artists paradise, is stunningly beautiful at any time of the year.

This old village, with it's strong Celtic history and culture is almost surrounded by the sea. To the west of Lizard point the scenery is wild and desolate and it is here that the magnificent cliffs take the full force of the mighty atlantic gales. To the east the countryside is somewhat softer and more sheltered. Lizard benefits from being in an area of outstanding natural beauty and botanical importance. There are many rare and beautiful plants and flowers to be found and owing to the mild and gentle climate, in these parts, flowers bloom early and it is not unusual to find Daffodils or Camelias in full bloom in late December or early January.

Superb walks are to be enjoyed along the cliff tops for it is here that the air is crisp and clear and on a fine day the magnificent views extend as far as Devon. The sight of the waves tumbling against the cliffs is nothing less than breathtaking.

In Lizard itself, just as all around the peninsular, you will find many thatched and whitewashed cottages. These traditional cottages are also clustered round tiny harbours, looking now much as they did a hundred years or so ago. Most of these cottage have little gardens that in the summer months are a joyous riot of colour.

A fishing community still exists here with locally caught fish, crab and lobster being served in many of the local pubs and restuarants. A delicious cornish cream tea is another treat not to be missed.

There is much to do in this enchanting region and here in this unspoilt corner of England you can be as busy as you like taking in many of the area's attractions which range from local fishing trips to the hi-tech Goonhilly Satelite Experience. You can go horse riding, play golf or simply laze and swim from any of the beautiful beaches and coves.

You will find many interesting shops to visit, some of which offer for sale the work of local artist's and potters. You will find jewellery and other art forms made from the locally found mineral stone Sepentine, a stone prized for the delicate shades of Red, Purple and Green released through cutting and polishing. There are plenty of pubs and historic inns but above all else it is the memory of the charm and beauty of this wonderful place that will remain with you forever.
