Portreath Harbour

We were heading along the coast road to St Ives when we called in to Portreath, where the waves were crashing in on a stormy morning.Not sure what this little beacon is at the end of the harbour, but it was getting a pounding. Note.. I have just read some info on one of Vince's images & apparently this

This was taken in Tehidy park near Portreath.. The cheeky monkey [Squirrel] sat on my foot then in the tree and kept repeating the pattern . So I set up my Tripod and yes here he is, more luck then anything.

A little piece of Kernow has been taken today ! The blockhouse at the end of the harbour pier that has been there for years has been swallowed by the sea today. Sometimes known as the monkey house the building at the end of the pier was a shelter for the harbour pilot in times of rough seas but today it was taken by the sea itself. Portreath harbour in the 18th century was a major port for the mining industry exporting the hard won tin and copper from the large deposits in Cornwall and for the import of precious coal for the many beam engines as Cornwall does not have any coal of it's own.

Dead Mans Locker

Here is a look out which over looks Portreath harbour. It is known as dead mans locker because it was once used as a temporary mortuary when the sea would wash dead bodies onto the beach.

Afraid we chickened out on this walk when we cam to these steps. we really didn't think it was wise with our joint problems, we was going to walk to Porthtowen, But expect Martin will do it as he is younger and fitter
