Carn Brea

The high ground in the distance is Carn Brea which dominates over Redruth,Pool and Camborne over on the other side of the hill. On top of the hill is the monument to Francis Basset, 1st Baron de Dunstanville and Basset ( 1757-1835 ). He was one of the major mine owners in a very rich area of mining. Francis Basset was a very rich man but a man of great virtue. He was instrumental in the Plymouth defensive earthworks, quelling the miner's food riots, petitioning parliament for the abolition of slavery and if my memory serves me correctly the construction of many houses for the miner's and their families. The monument was erected on top of Carn Brea by public subscription in his honour.
