About Torpoint

Torpoint is a lively little town set in the lovely Rame Peninsula on the beautiful banks of the Tamar River. The town has strong Naval connections and a deep rooted seafaring history. To the south of Torpoint is St.John's Lake, and to the north is Upper Wilcove, a small creek. The scenery all around is quite picturesque and to the west of the town are delightful beaches and secluded bays.

A little out from the town is the finest Georgian House in Cornwall. Anthony House was built of granite for Sir William Carew in 1711-1721 by an unknown architect. The main entrance is on the south side and has a large columned porte-cachere (entrance port for carriages) added in the 19th-century. It is a stunning house of handsome proportions and contains a fine collection of Carew family portraits including works by Reynolds (The Carew family lived at Anthony since 1450). The house also shows original panelling and has a magnificent staircase. There are many treasures to be seen including fine furniture and china. The imaginative gardens and grounds extend to the River Lynher.

Torpoint makes an excellent holiday centre, not only is it an interesting and appealing resort in it's own right but it is close to all the amenities of Plymouth and offers easy access to the delights of Dartmoor. There are excellent shopping facilities, good inns and restaurants and at nearby Anthony there is a delightful picnic area. Places to visit in the area include - The Monkey Sanctury at Looe, Jamaica Inn, Flambards Village and Pendennis Castle.
