The northern descent of Kirkstone Pass showing Brotherswater in the distance. Super road for driving and cycling, both up and down, and I have done both....albeit cycling many years ago! Image cannot be loaded
It's a Struggle ! Getting up and looking down.

This is the top of the Struggle, aptly named steep and twisty road up to the Inn at the top where the Struggle meets the road at the Kirkstone Inn at the Kirkstone Pass. The Struggle links the Kirstone Pass road with Ambleside. The road is one of our Dave John's favourite drives ! Image cannot be loaded

It is the District's highest pass traversed by road, between Ambleside in Rothay Valley and Patterdale in Ullswater Valley. The Struggle is the local name for the Kirkstone Pass road out of Ambleside as opposed to the main one from Windermere up over the top then down towards Ullswater. This is from halfway up the Struggle looking back towards Ambleside and Windermere, and the day did not get any brighter til much later in the day Image cannot be loaded

Brothers Water from Kirkstone Pass

Kirkstone Pass with an altitude of 1,489 feet is the Lake District’s highest pass that is open to motor traffic. It connects Ambleside in the Rothay Valley to Patterdale in the Ullswater valley – the A592 road. There is another route from Troutbeck, which joins the Ambleside road at the Kirkstone Pass Inn.
In places, the gradient is 1 in 4. Brothers Water provides a picturesque view on the descent to Patterdale. Image cannot be loaded

This telephone box outside the Inn has been this grey 'undercoat' colour for as long as I can remember. Not only needs a lick of RED paint but a lot of TLC is required to bring back to it's former glory. Wonder if it even works!! Image cannot be loaded
Herdwick Sheep on the Kirkstone Pass
© Alan Whitehead (view gallery)
Just about the only life you see on the Kirkstone Pass is the Herdwick sheep. The breed is well suited to this mountainous environment and the lambs are born black, so the one nearest to the mother is this year's. Then the grey slowly develops, so the other lamb is from last year and it will soon drift away from the mother and younger lamb. Image cannot be loaded
The Kirkstone Pass Inn

A quick delve into the past and we find ourselves at the top of Kirkstone Pass and the Inn at the junction with The Sruggle. The Struggle is an aptly named road that comes up from Ambleside and is well steep- I have not driven it myself but one of my customers back in the day was a removal van driver and the only way he could get his lorry to go up the hill was in REVERSE. I also failed to to in the Inn we see here but have seen the inside on the TV series with Richard Wilson driving scenic routes in old classic cars. Image cannot be loaded
The Grand View From Kirkstone Pass

Taken from the small car park on the Kirkstone pass. The drive from Windermere up to the Kirkstone Inn (where the Struggle comes up from Ambleside) is a journey full of stunning vistas at every turn of the road. There is a car park opposite the Inn but for the view above continue driving a short distance to the next small car park, a lunch stop to remember !! Image cannot be loaded
