This attractive little place can boast of once being an important market town with a history stretching back to around the 15th and 16th centuries. It came to prominence during the heady days of the woollen trade and to the edge of the town lies the hamlet of Broughton Mills, once the home of one of the largest woollen mills in the area.

Today, Broughton remains a thriving market town with a busy market square, here apart from pleasant shops visitors can also see the ancient village stocks used to chastise any misbehaving villager of yester-year.

Broughton is encircled by some of the most outstanding scenery in Cumbria with stunning views to be enjoyed from anywhere you wander. It is in close proximity to the spot where the River Duddon thrusts its waters into the sea and there is a rich variety of spectacular landscapes to be enjoyed. These include Coniston, the Grizdale Forest, Grizebeck, Foxfield, Kirkby and the Duddon Bridge, all offer that something special and are easily reached from the town. Other interesting visits are the Swinside Stone Circles and the Duddon Furnace which happens to be the most complete charcoal fired furnace in the country.

The village has an excellent range of shops, cafe's, restaurants and boasts a number of friendly pubs, some offering bed and breakfast should you decide to stay, stroll a little and soak up the atmosphere of a relaxing, rural village.

If walking is not your delight, then why not bring or hire a cycle, Broughton lies on the trail of the Cumbrian Cycle Way, a trip of some 250 miles which takes you on a way-marked route right round the county. Walking, horse riding or cycling are amongst the best ways of discovering the breathtaking beauty of the Furness Peninsula.
