Pictures of St Bees Head

a Animal Park or Zoo in the town of St Bees, in the county of Cumbria

About St Bees Head

These are the only cliffs on the coast of Cumbria, and it here visitors can catch a glimpse of the sheer drama of sea-birds, for the russet sandstone breaks in the cliffs have become nesting places for thousands of gulls, and vast numbers of other birds.

The only way to reach the headland is on foot, but what a rich reward you reap from the trip! Across the cliff top path there is the opportunity to see Peregrine, Cormorant, Raven and Gannet. But beware the trip to this magnificent RSBP site is not for the feint hearted.

Dramatic scenes can be witnessed during the autumn and spring migratory period when hundreds of thousands of birds take to the skies. In winter, on a clear day it is possible to see grebes, divers and sea ducks at distance from the shore. Again, in winter severe conditions may prevail making this a precarious trip for the hardiest of birders.

For those sticking to the birds nesting on the shoreline cliffs, there are Kittiwakes, Razorbills, Guillemots and Fulmars. A few Puffins may be visible, and you may be lucky enough to catch sight of Black Guillemots for St.Bees Head is their only breeding ground in England.

St.Bees Head is the westernmost part of Cumbria and the start of the famous "Coast to Coast" walk.
