About Ulpha

Wonderful scenic area amid wild lonely heather and gorse covered fells. It name is from a Scandinavian word meaning "wolf hill". In the village there are scattered cottages, and on the higher ground visitors will find the Church of St.John the Baptist which was originally a chapel of ease to the church at Millom.

St.John's is picturesquely set behind old stone walls. It is a typical Dales church which you enter through a wooden lynch gate, it has a short bell tower, and inside there are fragments of old wall paintings and an alter made from apple or pear wood.

The vast countryside of the region is best known for its secluded beauty. In the distance visitors will find the Hardknott Pass, Coniston Water and the magnificent Grizedale Forest.
