About Church Broughton

Church Broughton is an attractive Derbyshire village lying in open countryside that is perhaps best noted for its ancient church dedicated to Saint Michael. The church, built in the 14th century is a handsome building benefiting from a sturdy west tower topped with a small spire and Victorian pinnacles. There are interesting gargoyles and a long 14th century chancel. The church, in its a peaceful churchyard with a scattering of ancient, weathered graves and tombs offset by old trees surrounded by clumps of flowers, is well worth seeing. Together, the church, shop and village inn form the focus of daily life for a lively local community.

Until the early part of the 20th century, this peaceful village was part of the Derbyshire estates held by the Dukes of Devonshire, at this time it was a farming community that largely depended upon agriculture for its prosperity. Now, the farms have all but gone and Church Broughton with its old cottages, houses and properties of a newer build forms a desirable residential village for commuters.

The village lies 10 miles south west of Derby, is close to Uttoxeter with its famous racecourse, and is not far from the delightful banks of the meandering River Dove where you will find Sudbury Hall, a magnificent property administered by the National Trust which was formerly built for the Lords Vernon. The house has rich Restoration interiors, woodcarvings by Grinling Gibbons and superb staircase by Edward Pierce. The village is also within easy reach of the fringe of the Peak District National Park and the historic areas of the pottery region of Burton-on-Trent.
