About Hayfield

This picturesque limestone village in the high ground of the Peak District offers the best access to the spectacular Kinder Scout, a mountainous range reaching to almost 2,100 feet. Sometimes, en-route it is possible to see the tumbling waters of the Kinder Waterfall, but in seriously hot weather the fall is known to dry-up.

Up here amongst crystal clear air, walkers can spot grouse for much of the high plateau is grouse moor which is open to walkers, climbers and ramblers. The views from here are well worth the climb, they take in the Kinder Reservoir, constructed in 1910, the Mermaids Pool into which Kinder Waterfall tumbles, and mile after mile of beautiful heather and bracken clad moors, hills and valley's in which you can sometimes come across a patchwork of tiny, sparkling streams. To say that all this is "heavenly" is an understatement, for this is scenery that is singularly magnificent, and sometimes overwhelming.

The village of Hayfield flourishes as a delightful inland resort, it offers visitors plenty to do and see, there are several pubs, a few shops, restaurants and a pleasant fish and chip cafe. It has a calm peaceful atmosphere, with the lower slopes of the adjoining countryside being mostly farmlands, so it offers excellent opportunities for visitors wanting to enjoy wide open spaces but not yet ready to tackle spectacular heights.

Hayfield is on the door-step of the start of the Pennine Way, and is within easy reach of Castleton with its glorious underground caves. A little further afield lie the three magnificent reservoirs of the High Peaks, the Derwent, Ladybower and the Howden. The village is an ideal starting point to explore some of Derbyshire's greatest treasure houses, these include near-by Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall.
