About Horsley

Horsley is located in beautiful countryside around 6 miles north east of Derby. It has an attractive village green, a church and chapel, a village hall, a pub and a traditional tree lined main village street. On its outskirts lies a renowned golf course lying in 168 acres of stunning countryside, this was recently re-designed by Peter McEvoy, former title holder of the World Golfing Championship.

Peculiar to the village are three fountains given in 1824 by the Right Reverend Sitwell, a relative of the Sitwells of Stainsby Hall at nearby Smalley. Another distinct feature is its old stone pillar box, possibly the only one of its kind in England.

The village church carries a dual dedication to St.Clement and St. James. The church occupies a pleasant hillside setting in a tree and flower filled churchyard, it dates from the 13th-century and has many historic features including a 14th-century tower, a clerestory of the 15th-century and several fine stained glass windows. Church treasures include a Perpendicular octagonal font, a medieval crucifix, and a fine Elizabethan chalice. Ripples of light streaming through the windows dapples the church with tones of light and shade adding to its calm hallowed atmosphere, thus it is a lovely place to spend a few moments in peaceful prayer and contemplation.

The local Wesleyan Chapel is somewhat younger having only been built in 1845. It is however, in a picturesque location beside the village green and is attractively built of local stone. Of the castle that once stood here, there is now nothing left, but this goes down in history as having been close to Coxbench and was home to such illustrious persons as the Dukes of Lancaster and Norfolk.

Horsley has a pub and all the other usual village amenities, it has a fair share of interesting properties and is a popular destination for people from other close by town's and villages who enjoy walking and countryside pursuits.
