Middleton Top

The engine house was built in 1829. It houses a Butterly beam engine that was used to haul wagons by cable up the Middleton incline, a distance of 708 yards and a gradient of 1 in 8.5 for a 134 years before retirement in 1963. It is still in full working order but instead of fired by wood it now runs on compressed air. It is only open on certain days through the year.
