About Bovey Tracey

The pretty town of Bovey Tracey borders with the beautiful landscape of Dartmoor. It is an old region, a Saxon settlement grew up here in the 5th-century and the townfolk witnessed turbulent times when Bovey Tracey was the scene of Civil War skirmishes in the year 1646. The name Cromwells Arch was conferred upon an old gateway, once part of an ancient priory.

Bovey's parish church is dedicated to St.Thomas Becket. It is said to have been built by Sir William de Tracey as a penance for his part in Becket's murder which was in 1170. The original church was burned down in the 14th-century. The church we see and admire today is Perpendicular with a superbly decorated tower. The beautiful interior shows fine Devon craftsmanship. There is a carved pulpit and an amazing rood screen, there are also fine Jacobean monuments. The second parish church, on the opposite side of the river, is Victorian Gothic in design and shows lovely mosaics. The nearby House of Marbles has an exceptional collection of hand-made glass as well as a massive collection of marbles.

This pleasant town makes an ideal place from which to explore the delights of Dartmoor with it's wealth of wildlife, animals and forests. There are interesting walks in the town and much to see and do within the moor itself. Close attractions include; Becky Falls, Hound Tor Medieval Village and Canonteign Falls and Country Park. Dartmoor Miniture Pony Centre is a short distance away.
