About Crediton

Always a beautiful place, Crediton must have been awesome in the year AD674 when legend tells us that St. Boniface was born here as plain Winfrith. Young Winfrith was destined to become the first ever christian preacher in Europe, he also became Bishop of Mainz in Germany and he is solely responsible for converting many European countries to the christian religion. St.Bomiface was rewarded for his work through Crediton being deemed the seat of the first Bishop of Devon and Cornwall.

Fires in the mid-17th-century destroyed a great number of the town's buildings but next to the cathedral size church that dominates the town can be seen the 13th-century Chapter House. This building contains the room where the church's Govenors have met since the middle of the 16th-century. The town also has a large statue of St. Boniface.

Crediton, these days is a town of commerce and industry, it is particularly known for the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and cider. The town is favourably situated close to the Cathedral City of Exeter and is not far from the wild beauty of Dartmoor Forest.
