Often referred to as a mile long sandpit, Dawlish Warren sits at the mouth of the River Exe where river and sea become one. It is a busy and exciting place which offers a lively time for families. The town has a variety of shops, good retaurants and inns while at the beach end provides all the usual sea-side amusements including arcades and go-karting. The golden sands offer safe sun-bathing, the beach is patrolled by life guards so swimming from the beach is safe except for round the point where fast flowing currents can be dangerous.
The vast expanse of mudflats to the north are a National Wildfowl Reserve and a major attraction of the area. Hundreds of birds are recorded here each year and in the winter these numbers are swollen by migrating birds, such as Brent Geese who fly in from the far north. The reserve has a fabulous collection of rare crocus-the Warren Crocus is protected, there is also a splendid collection of orchids and wild and beautiful grasses. These mudflats, sand dunes and reed beds throw up an endless bounty for the botanist, naturalist and rambler, round every corner something fresh and wonderful greets the eye.
One of the best ways to enjoy the fine coastal views is by taking in a pleasure boat trip along the coast, or join a sea-fishing trip. The River Exe has a Marina and the coastal waters are popular with yachtsmen. For those who prefer to go it alone-there are rowing and motor boats for hire.
