About Hartland

There is not a lot to beat the sound of waves crashing against the rocky promontory which was known by the Roman's as the "Promontory of Hercules". It rises to a dramatic 325 feet, and is the home of Hartland Point Lighthouse, built in 1874. The lighthouse, now fully automated, was for over a hundred years tended by three lighthouse keepers. It has one of the strongest beams, reaching 26 miles out to sea.

From this beautiful location there are extensive sea and coastal views, on a clear day it is possible to see Lundy Island and the mouth of the Bristol Channel. Below there is access to the beach, where the scattered remains of ships floundered on the rocks can still be seen.

In Hartland village, around one mile from the coast, visitors will find the historic abbey that is the home of the Stucley family. The abbey originally dates from the 12th century when it was built as a monastery. The abbey is an amazing house, it served as a monastery for over 400 years, but has never been sold since it passed into the hands of the Stucley's. It is full of family treasures, including collections of fine furniture, pictures and porcelain.

The grounds of the house offer much to delight, with Peacocks wandering at will, whilst in the Old Deer Park you can come across friendly donkey's and Black Welsh Mountain Sheep. There is an abundance of exquisite flora and magnificent views of the surrounding countryside.

Anyone wishing to spend time exploring Hartland and its awe-inspiring coastline will find a good choice of nearby accommodation, this ranges from hotels to friendly bed and breakfast homes. The village itself has a few shops, a post office and a garage. Several pubs and inns can be found in leafy country lanes and along the coast.
