About Kingswear

Picturesquely situated at the mouth of the River Dart, this popular resort has changed little with the passage of time. A delightful mix of houses and hotels climb haphazardly up the hill above the estuary, taking full advantage of a glorious south facing position. The summer months see this little place crammed with visitors who come to enjoy the pleasures of the river, the coast and the very special scenery found in this lovely old part of Devon. There is a passenger ferry, taking cars and foot passengers to Dartmouth's unspoilt waterfront which still retains the charm and atmosphere of the days when horse-drawn carriages clattered along its cobbled Quay.

Of the interesting buildings to be seen in the area, secluded Kingswear Castle built in 1491 as a defensive fortress, remains one of the most interesting. The castle is in the ownership of the Landmark Trust and not open to public view although it can be easily seen in its favoured riverside position from the waters of the Dart, or reached on foot via a lovely riverside walk.

Great excitement is created by the Paighton and Dartmouth Steam Railway, a heritage line which runs through seven miles of beautiful countryside giving unforgettable coastal views extending across Lyme Bay to Portland in Dorset. Other places of attraction in the area include Higher Brownstone Farm and Coleton Fishacre Estate, both belong to the National Trust and both offer a diverse range of interest amid enchanting scenery. With a wealth of wildlife, intriguing little creeks, romantic buildings, the sparkling ocean and lovely little bays and coves, Kingswear makes an ideal holiday destination at any time of year.

Places to visit include: Bayards Cove Fort, Dartmouth, Woodland Leisure Park, a trip on the Paighton and Dartmouth Railway, take a ferry trip to Dartmouth, or venture on a Sea fishing trip.
