About Postbridge

This lovely old place makes an ideal touring centre for the moor. The village takes its name from the bridge across the River Dart that carried the earliest Darmoor post road between Exeter and South Cornwall. A few yards away lies the primitive-looking structure that is by far the most impressive of Dartmoor's famous clapper bridges. It is roughly constructed from huge chunks of granite and quite probably dates back to the 13th-century, a time when the inner moor was opened up for farming and the mining industry. Always crowded round by visitors, this relic from a veiled past must be the most photographed bridge in the county.

Postbridge is a tiny hamlet, it has a good inn, a well stocked shop and car parking facilities, yet this richly wooded area, at the heart of the moor has become a natural starting point for the thousands of visitors who annually come to explore the splendour and wonders of the moor. It is a relaxing place, with just a scattering of buildings, some are old stone cottages which have thrown open their doors to over-night guests, many of which return year after year.

A short distance away lies Bellever with its fascinating hut circles and other pre-historic monuments. In the near-by forest there are excellent way-marked nature trails.

As a centre for touring, Postbridge on the East Dart River, is a place tinged with enviable scenery that would be very hard to beat.
