About Dartington Hall

Outstanding grounds surround this late 14th century house, with original great hall, outer courtyard and a collection of other buildings.

The property has been a centre of excellence for the arts since the 1920's, today it also provides the very best of conference facilities and offer superb bed and breakfast accommodation, but despite the attraction of a beautiful house, it is the romantic landscape and stunning gardens that is the focus of everyone's attention.

In 1925 Darting Hall Estate was purchased by Leonard and Dorothy Elmhirst, at this time the house was in need of repair and the garden had almost returned to nature. They set about restoring both, and what we see today stands as a tribute to their combined efforts.

This is a 20th century garden in which several noted 20th century landscape designers have had a hand. These include the American Beatrix Ferrand whose influence can be seen in the gardens surrounding the courtyard and the beautiful woodland walkways. Three walks take you through a wonderland of camellia's, magnolia trees and rhododendrons, these provide a stunning, colourful clusters amongst a rich array of holly, bay and yew.

Later, Percy Cane was to introduce the attractive magnolia steps, azalea dell and the glade. More latterly, designer Preben Jacobsen, re-planted the herbaceous border to a new design, and there is now the addition of a fragrant Japanese garden by Philip Booth.

Dartington Hall Gardens spread out from a medieval tiltyard with terraces, with the overall creation being of a strongly architectural feel. However, this garden is a joy at any time of year with each season bringing its own blend of magic from vibrant red winter berries, through to the soft shades of late winter and early spring, come summer there is the brightest of spectacular blooms and in autumn, leaves that gently change from green to gold.

Dartington Hall Garden is open all the year round.
