About Yealmpton

This is a real Devon village of yester-year which despite expansion has managed to remain largely unspoilt.

The village lies on the meandering River Yealm around seven miles from the historic city of Plymouth. It has a myriad of streets filled with a pleasant mixture of typical Devonian properties with entrance doors leading immediately off the road. Lanes ricochet this way and that, leading to quiet "off the beaten track" hamlets, such as pretty Dunstone, once home to the now closed Shire Horse Centre.

Yealmpton has St.Bartholemew's Church, this dates from the 12th century and lies in a peaceful churchyard where the dead of the village have been buried for hundreds of years.

The village is also the home of the famous Mother Hubbard's Cottage, a picturesque cob and stone building of which legend recalls was built originally for the housekeeper of Kitley Manor House. Now visitors can see inside this grand old cottage for it has become a delightful tea-room and restaurant.

Kitley House remains to be seen a glorious riverside location between Yealmpton and the village of Brixton. This is now a beautiful country house hotel, its legendry association with Mother Hubbard is celebrated with rooms named for her.

Kitley Caves Country Park is a popular visitor attraction of the area, here you can explore illuminated show caves where green marble was once quarried, see a mass of rare wild plants, enjoy a variety of birds and animals in their own enclosures, and for children there is an adventure play ground. The landscape of the park has lovely woodland which offers walks beneath trees, strolls along river banks and shaded glades for picnics. The park covers almost 50 acres of restful countryside, for the benefit of visitors there is an interpretation centre and a shop.
