Pictures of Buckland Abbey

a Abbey in the town of Yelverton, in the county of Devon

About Buckland Abbey

Buckland Abbey is situated near Yelverton at the edge of the Dartmoor National Park. It was built as a 13th century Cistercian monastery, which was disbanded at the time of the Reformation and later sold to Richard Grenville in 1541. Sir Francis Drake purchased the abbey in 1581, following its conversion during the 1570's.

The house contains many relics from Drake's time and of the Grenville family. Drakes drum is on show, along with memorabilia of his great naval experiences.

In its glorious position above the River Tavy, offers a memorable tour of the abbey plus much more. In the extensive grounds there is a lovely Monastic barn, a sweetly scented herb garden, walks to discover the beauty and wildlife of the estate, and a craft work-shop. There are exhibitions recalling the long history of Buckland Abbey from its very first interception.

Buckland Abbey is open from April to October, it offers an interesting visit for all the family.
