About Anvil Point Lighthouse

Anvil Point Lighthouse, located near Swanage in Dorset, England, stands proudly on the eastern end of the Jurassic Coast, gracing the Isle of Purbeck with its presence. Constructed in 1881 and initially powered by oil, this coastal landmark underwent electrification in 1960. The tower, crafted from local stone, reaches a height of 12 meters (39 feet).

Functioning as a vital navigational aid, Anvil Point Lighthouse guides ships through the English Channel and marks the southern entrance to Swanage Bay. Its operational characteristics include a distinctive white flash every 10 seconds, providing mariners with a recognizable pattern and a nominal range of approximately 17 nautical miles.

While the lighthouse transitioned to automation in 1991, eliminating the need for a resident keeper, it remains an integral part of the maritime heritage of the region. The surrounding coastal landscape, adorned with picturesque cliffs and expansive views of the English Channel, enhances the allure of Anvil Point.

While the lighthouse itself may not be open to the public, visitors can revel in the beauty of the coastline, embark on scenic walks, and capture breathtaking views of this historic maritime structure. Anvil Point Lighthouse stands as both a functional beacon for seafarers and a cherished component of the UNESCO World Heritage Siteā€”the Jurassic Coast. For those drawn to maritime history and coastal beauty, a visit to the surroundings of Anvil Point offers a memorable experience in the heart of Dorset's natural splendor.
